Enjoy the Full Moon Kayak Tour

This is the perfect nature adventure under a full moon!  If your stay in Puerto Rico happens to fall during the full moon stage, you don't have to miss out on our evening Kayaking tours. This tour replaces the Bio-Bay Kayak Adventure during the full moon cycle as the reflection of the moonlight on the surface of the lagoon makes it difficult to see the bioluminescent organisms.

But, that same moonlight exposes mangrove forests, eight ecosystems, bird life, the second oldest lighthouse in Puerto Rico, iguanas and much more of nature's secrets that are normally overlooked on the darker nights!

When the full moon cycle occurs on the dates noted, this tour does not operate - on Good Friday, Easter, July 4, July 25, Thanksgiving Day, December 24, 25 & 31 or January 1.

Hotel Pick-Ups

Pickups are available in San Juan only. You must choose the "with transportation" option to be picked up in San Juan for this tour. PLEASE NOTE: SAN JUAN IS APPROXIMATELY TWO HOURS FROM THE SITE OF THE KAYAK ADVENTURE, SO THE PICKUP TIME WILL BE AT LEAST TWO HOURS BEFORE THE TOUR TIME.

Tour Details

If crowds are not your thing, take this moonlight kayak tour and enjoy a peaceful kayak adventure into Laguna Grande with less of the "crowds" - as most come to see the Bioluminescent Organisms. This tour focuses on nature and shows you there are places under the mangrove canopy that under the right conditions can reveal Dinoflagellate.

Don't let your day end when the sun goes down. Under the blanket of the night sky and the historical lighthouse of Fajardo, you can enjoy views of the only U.S. Tropical Rainforest that stands majestically in the background.

You will be outfitted with all the needed gear which includes: double kayaks, backrest, paddles with leashes, PFD's (Lifejackets) and two to three Guide Kayaks with all needed safety equipment, lights and refreshments. Your guiedes then make sure you have the necessary Botanical insect repellant as well as a brief course in kayak 101 safety training which covers all aspects of the tour and operation of your kayak.

You then head across a small fisherman's cove to the entrance of Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve. Here, the tour group enters a mystical channel that leads to a peaceful place where the mangroves create natural tunnels and the sights and sounds of nature surround them. Along this 30-minute paddle, your lead Guide will be stopping to give commentary on the following points of interest:

• Mangrove forest and the different species
• Bird life that inhabits the area
• Aquatic marine life that use the lagoon as an estuary
• Information on reptiles such as Tree Iguanas
• Rainforest and its role for the lagoon
• Lighthouse History

At this point you will enter the lagoon called Laguna Grande (large lagoon). Here, the paddle is along the edge of the mangrove forest as you watch and listen for movement in the mangrove trees. Look for the beautiful Great White egret, brown pelican, 35 species of warblers, great blue heron & yellow crowned night heron - all the while hoping to catch a glimpse of a shooting star.

This leads to a break point were beautiful views of the Rainforest and the lighthouse of Fajardo accompany interpretation of the natural area along with good conversations. At this point, you will be about one hour into the tour and, under a blanket of stars, it's time to start the return to the departure site, which will take about 30 minutes. Snacks and refreshments are provided at the end of the tour.

~ This activity is a "No Swimming" activity under DNRA 7241.
~ No one under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be permitted to partake in the activity.
~ No children under the age of six years allowed.
~ Combined weight not to exceed 500 pounds.
~ Activity is semi-athletic.
~ This tour is not suggested for people with fears of the dark, water or those who have the following conditions; heart conditions, back problems or ladies 6 months and further in pregnancy.
